How many Different Species are there in Cornwall?

The Marine Biological Association of Great Britain prepared a Marine Life Topic Note in 2005: titled MARINE BIODIVERSITY and presented by  Keith Hiscock andJenny Smirithwaite.   They concluded that at present known species of the different algaes around the UK are:



Common species in Cornwall:

Green:  Sea Lettuce Ulva lactuca, Gut Weed  Enteromorpha intestinalis , Velvet Horn Codium tomentosum

Brown: Tangle or Oarweed Laminaria digitata ,  Furbelows  Saccorhiza polyschides, Sugar Kelp Laminaria saccharina, Cuvie Laminaria hyperborea , Dabberlocks (Murlin)  Alaria esculenta

Red:
Purple Laver Porphyra umbilicalis  ,Red Epiphyte Polysiphonia lanosa  ,  Carragheen Chondrus crispus, Pepper Dulse Laurencia pinnatifida, Ceramium,

Helford Voluntary Marine Conservation Area reports over 400 species in the Helford River alone.  

In the 18th century John Stackhouse carried out extensive research into algae species in Cornwall and declared that Stackhouse Cove contained the wildest range of seaweed species every recorded in Britain.  (See full article below.)
